hi there. may i know will protein supplements cause infertility or low sperm count? any doctor (the one from UK?) or nutritionist here to consult me on this matter? here is the myth: our body produces testosterone. as we take protein supplements which go to muscles building, our body system sense the presence of extra testosterone, and lowered the normal testosterone in our body. thus, our own testosterone level gets lower and causes less sperm production but the supplements we take goes to muscle building. is it true?

No, that is un true with protein. That is true when you take anabolic steroids or other types of hormones that our body would naturally make. Protein is found in many foods, and when an appropriate amount is digested the amino acids that previously were part of the digested protein are rebuilt by a process called protein synthesis (not getting into that). Therefore all the proteins that we make are natural and are then used to help build muscle. In no way does it cause infertility as far as I know.

imo you are too young to be messing with supplements. Make sure you eat healthy and get your PROTEIN from REAL FOOD... The recent boom in supplements is evident. We will not know the true side effects of these supplements until they have been around long enough in peoples lifetimes.

Its is not natural to "supplement" your body with chemically altered ingredients. When you are you are young your body can take so much but it wil come back and affect you later in your life.

hi i am 16 years old and looking to get bigger i am about 5'11 and 170 lbs, me goal is to be 180 lbs in 6 months for football next year. Should i use suppliments or should i just stick to a healthy diet with lots of protein?  thanks, billy

I definately believe u should stick to a healthy diet with lots of proteins. It might take 6 months but it is a safe six months and that the hard work u put in will stay with u as well as good eating habits. Protein supplements are only a short cut to get to where u want and once there how would u maintain it? It's like cheating to get to the finish line without actually running the race!

surely the whole point of a race is to finish first???

Protein is a supplement and should be used as such. The average human can only gain 5 pounds of muscle per year regardless of the supplements you take besides steroids. Now a mesomorph could probably gain more but since you're 170 at 5"11 you most likely have an ecotomorph body and will only beable to put on 5 pounds of lean muscle. Just enusre you ingest your weight in grams of protein so each day 170 grams for 170 pounds. If you do that plus lifting weights full body 3 times a week or 6 days part body then you'll gain probably 4 pounds during 6 months with some of that been fat. Take protein when you can't get the protein needed in your daily diet, try eating skinless boneless chicken (1 pound = about 130 grams). If you overeat trying to bulk you'll only gain more fat not muscle.

i was taking about 100 grams of protein a day in the summer, i lost all the fat off my chest area and put on about a stone of musle. the official recomendation is 0.6g of protein per lb of body weight for the average person, and they say if you are a full on bodybuilder you should have 1-2 grams peer pound of body weight.

If you work out a lot but you eat a lot as well (thats me) ur weight is over than average will protein supplements have any side effects in combination with a lower fat diet or i should lose some weight first and then start the supplements. btw i am 17 and please don't tell me personal opinions just tell me something only if you know what you are talking about. thx a lot Jimmy

Drinking the correct amounts of protein will help you burn the fat off. The trick is to watch your calorie, protein, carbs and fat intakes. Make sure you are eating healthy too. It's not bad to eat a lot, so long as you eat right! I eat 6 times a day (including supplements). I take in roughly 175 grams of protein, 150 grams of healthy carbs or less, no more than 55 grams of fat per day which comes out to about 1700 calories. I've lost considerable amounts of fat and gained a good amount of muscle and strength over the past month on this diet.

This is not opinion Jimmy, it is simply how you get it done. Hit the weight room 3/4 days a week and do your cardio 1/2 days per week. Remember to rest. Your body recovers most of its muscle capacity while you sleep an on your rest days. Cycle muscle groups and try to get at least one full body workout or circuit training session in per week. YOU WILL SEE RESULTS

And one more thing, the right kinds of protein are also essential. Whey protein is the absolute best for your post workout shake because of its fast absorption rate. Take 45-50 grams (two scoops) with water to increase the speed your body will take it in. For your bedtime or early morning shake, try slow digesting Casein protein. Take 25-50 grams of this kind of protein depending on where you are in your total daily count. You can also mix the two to get immediate and prolonged results in one hit.
