Weight loss supplements can come in many different forms. While some weight loss supplements are healthy, many can become addictive and can cause permanent damage to your heart and nervous system. It is important before you start taking any new weight loss supplement that you carefully read the packaging, and know what the possible side effects of taking the supplement are. You may also want to consult your physician before introducing any new supplement into you life to make sure you are making the right and safest choice for you. Some weight loss supplements can cause permanent damage to your body with just a few uses, so it’s important to keep yourself protected as much as possible.
A popular form of weight loss supplement is the appetite suppressant. An appetite suppressant will reduce your desire for food in order to help you loose weight. A popular form of appetite suppressant is a bulking agent. A bulking agent will absorb liquid in your stomach and swell up larger, making you feel full when really you are not. You appetite is then suppressed, and consequently you consume less food. The FDA has started to take a closer look at bulking agents. Many of these types of weight loss supplements contain guar gum which can cause obstructions in your stomach, esophagus, and intestines. Others are fiber based and are much safer for long term use.
Metabolic Enhancers (Ephedra and Caffeine)
Using metabolic enhancers for weight loss is both dangerous, and usually ineffective. A metabolic enhancer will increase your metabolism and energy level, the duration of the time you take the drug. In addition to increasing your energy level, these weight loss supplements also often increase your heart rate and can cause damage to your nervous system. In most studies, once a person goes off of the supplement their metabolic rate will return to normal, and they will regain al of the weight lost, if not more. These types of weight loss supplements are also highly addictive. Much like people get addicted to coffee and need it to function, people get addicted to these types of weight loss supplements to a point that their bodies feel they need them in order to function effectively. Ephedra has been removed from the market because of its damaging and addictive effects on the public.
Pyruvate
Pyruvate is an ingredient found in a variety of different weight loss products. It is often touted as being a natural alternative to prescription diet pills it acts as a muscle builder as well as aiding in weight loss. Studies however have shown very little improvement in weight loss between those taking the drug and those who are not.
Although weight loss supplements can often give you that extra push in the rigth direction when it comes to weight loss it’s important to put whatever supplement you are purchasing into perspective. A perfectly thin body will do you no good if you have permanently damaged your heart or nervous system. Take care with what you put in your body, and if you do choose to take a weight loss supplement take it for a short period of time to avoid addiction and keep your body in great shape.
